Subject: No frills, just mileages.
Subject: No frills, just mileages.
If this is the information you need, you will be delighted with this book five stars' worth. Other than that, there's nothing to interest anyone else. It's a thoroughly dull mass of names and numbers.
Basically, this is the names of towns and cities, and the mileages along various routes, for the use of travellers afoot or horse-powered. As well, along any route, they note the names and locations of any estates (if it has no ancient name, then merely the name of the present occupant).
This can be of great use to geneaologists trying to track down an ancestor who lived in an obscure village that was swallowed up by an urban neighbor a hundred years ago, or even where in an area a person lived along the routes. Historians may want it for tracing routes, and historical novelists can get their mileages correct while not inserting villages that didn't exist yet.
